Inline assistant
Apart from the main assistant section, the AI assistant is deeply integrated into various parts of the ShyEditor interface.
Writing area
Select any text, or click on the options icon near any paragraph, to open the inline AI Assistant menu.
In this menu, you can select from a number of predefined optimized AI options, or you can enter a custom command to edit the selected text, answer questions about it, or complete tasks.
Text transformations
Each transformation costs 1 AI credit:

| Add more depth | Develops the passage with more detail and nuance |
| Opposing argument | Generates a counterpoint to the selected claim |
| Proofread | Fixes errors without rephrasing |
| Translate | Translates into English, Spanish, German, French, Chinese, or Japanese |
| Change style | Rewrites in a preset style: Academic, Business, Casual, Child-friendly, Conversational, Emotional, Humorous, Informative, Inspirational, Meme, Narrative, Objective, Persuasive, or Poetic |
| Summarize text | Condenses the selected text |
| Write about this topic | Generates text on the selected topic |
| Continue writing | Generates the next passage based on the selection |
| Suggest outline | Proposes an outline from the selection |
| Suggest the next thesis | Suggests the next thesis point |
| Custom command | Free-form input — type any instruction you want |
Document-level operations
These operate on the entire sheet rather than a selection (1 credit each):
- Summarize this sheet — a concise overview of the full document
- Suggest a title — generate a title from the content
- Generate keywords — extract key terms and themes
- Continue writing — generate the next paragraph matching your voice and direction
- Write an introduction / Write a conclusion — draft opening or closing sections
The assistant window
The AI response will appear in a separate assistant window. You can move this window around the screen by dragging the header.
From the assistant window, you can:
- Compare the result against the original text with a visual diff toggle
- Browse alternatives — navigate between multiple suggestions with the previous/next buttons
- Iterate with follow-ups — type an instruction like "make it shorter" or "more formal" without starting over; follow-ups keep the context of the previous result (1 credit each)
- Apply the result — insert it into the document, replacing the selection
- Copy it to the clipboard, or save it as a note
- Regenerate — get a fresh suggestion if you're unhappy with the current one (1 additional credit)
Most operations also show a writing style dropdown, where Pro users can pick their personal or custom writing styles. It doesn't appear where a style wouldn't make sense — Proofread or Translate, for example.
Autocomplete
ShyEditor provides a smart context-aware autocomplete feature. The autocomplete suggestions are generated based on the information that is available about your project, as well as the current sheet and preceding text.
Press Tab while typing to request a suggestion — ghost text appears ahead of your cursor with a suggested continuation. Press Tab again to accept it, Escape to dismiss it, or just keep typing to clear it. You will only spend AI credits if you accept the suggestion; dismissing is free.
Other UI options
ShyEditor offers many AI-powered features throughout its' interface. Whenever you see this icon

it means that AI assistance is available. You can hover your cursor over this icon to read what the AI will do.
